I’ve been a born-again Christian since I was 7 1/2 years old, was raised in a Southern Baptist home and have been married to a Southern Baptist minister for 43 years. We choose to be Southern Baptist because of their stand for the Word, the Cooperative Program and their missions program. But I was dumbfounded, very burdened and very disappointed when I read about the resurgence of Calvinism in the July 19 issue of The Alabama Baptist (“There Is Another Way” editorial written by Bob Terry). I don’t understand how our Southern Baptist leaders can “agree to disagree” when Calvinists don’t accept our traditional doctrinal statement. The Word of God reads that Christ came for all of us to be saved — not an elect few. My, my, how can the leaders and whoever else is involved let this take place? I’m sure God can’t be pleased with this stand.
So what will be next? Oh, yes, next is that LifeWay Christian Stores can’t sell the movie “The Blind Side.” Really?
The article “‘The Blind Side’ removal brings backlash” that ran in the July 19 issue of The Alabama Baptist says, “The movie as a whole promotes Christian values and a redemptive message, however it does contain instances of street language and racial slurs against African-Americans” — as if there haven’t been slurs against all other races. That reasoning is spiritually shallow and biased and will not stand against the Word of God. Christ came to die, rose again and lives today, not for the elect and not for one race.
Southern Baptists, don’t wimp out on us … please!
