Candace McIntosh says praying on Baptist Women’s World Day of Prayer is very different than praying any other day of the year.
“I know when I’m praying on that day, my heart is connected to women all around the world,” said McIntosh, executive director of Alabama Woman’s Missionary Union. “We are praying for the same needs and the same women and children in areas of desperate need.”
A specific area of need serves each year as the focus of the day of prayer, set this year for Nov. 5. From nearly every country where Baptist groups exist, women will pray this year for the spread of the gospel in Africa.
In Africa, McIntosh said women sometimes walk a day or two and then sleep on the dirt floor of a church in order to get up on the day of prayer and be a part of a prayer group.
“I can get in my car, drive 10 minutes and join a group of women for the day of prayer. They can’t do that,” she said.
Women there face many different types of stress in their walk with Christ, according to the day of prayer guide available at www.bwawd.org.
Some prayer requests for African women include:
- the widows and fatherless children, many of whom are victims of war;
- women who hold sensitive government positions; and
- Baptist women leaders, both established and emerging, who spread the gospel, especially in the western and central regions. (TAB)
