SBC name change

SBC name change

I have been reading with great interest the proposed idea about renaming the Southern Baptist Convention (SBC) to something “less regional,” as the proponents would call it.

What they really mean is something “less offensive.” One interesting point I noticed in this whole situation is that, once again, in their infinite wisdom, the SBC has appointed people from megachurches and large organizations to ponder the “earthshaking” decision as to whether or not to change the name and what to change it to.

It seems that the smaller churches are neither smart enough nor important enough to participate in this matter (not that they would want to). It seems that the name “Southern” is too regional, “Baptist” is too denominational and “Convention,” in their case, is an oxymoron.

If the name is too offensive, I submit that it is probably offensive because of the doctrine and not because of the name. What’s next in the committee agenda? Tell pastors not to preach “offensive” messages? I truly believe that is coming to this country. If not by the SBC, then via the U.S. government.

Is it any wonder that small churches are dropping out of the SBC for that very reason? When you have an organization as large as the SBC, many entities will slither in under the guise of Christianity and try to promote their agenda, leaving the gospel in their wake.

I submit that this is nothing more and nothing less than a movement to be “politically correct” so as not to be offensive to the masses.

As Adrian Rogers once said, “It doesn’t matter who you offend as long as you please God; and it doesn’t matter who you please if you offend God.” Political correctness should go out with the rest of the trash.
